Pleased to Announce is a humorous, provocative, and formally inventive live cinema performance examining the financial, emotional, and social costs of documentary film awards campaigns — and the outsized role awards culture now plays in shaping documentary ambition, strategy, and self-worth.

Blending behind-the-scenes footage, campaign data, interviews, personal narrative, and live performance, the piece juxtaposes the public spectacle of awards season with the private anxieties of filmmakers caught in the endless churn of the awards-industrial complex within a starkly uneven playing field. Part cinema, part lecture, part theatrical confessional, the work unfolds in real time before an audience, transforming nonfiction storytelling into a live act of assembly, excavation, and confrontation.

With sharp humor and dark wit, Wilson interrogates the mythology of success that governs so much of documentary ecosytem: the endless strategizing, campaign machinery, pursuit of validation, and psychic toll of falling short. What happens when a film becomes defined by its awards trajectory? And what gets lost when recognition becomes the measure of value?

Rather than chasing votes and gold statuettes, what if campaign budgets were instead used to finance new films, pay living wages, or fund social justice initiatives? By upending awards as the primary metric of success, Wilson offers a humorous and necessary course correction — proposing new models rooted in community, sustainability, artistic purpose, and a renewed belief in the power of gathering together to contend with ourselves, our creative work, and our imperfect industries.
